Interesting and Wonderful Transcarpathia

Transcarpathian Oblast is the only one in Ukraine that shares its borders and has border crossing checkpoints with four European countries. All of them are members of the European Union. They are Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania.

In terms of population, Transcarpathian Oblast is the smallest among all other regions of our state. However, despite this fact, the territory of Transcarpathia is bigger than 40 countries. Among them, there are such well-known states as Andorra, Vatican City, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, San Marino, Bahrain, Brunei, Qatar, Cyprus, Lebanon, Singapore, Gambia, Jamaica, and Bahamas.

The territory of Transcarpathia is inhabited by people of almost 70 nationalities.

The geographical center of Europe is situated in Transcarpathia, near Dilove village. There is a big stone slab with an inscription that evidencesthis fact.

Tyachiv region of Transcarpathian Oblast is the biggest region in Ukraine in terms of population, which makes 165 thousand people.

The longest Transcarpathian village is Nyzhnyi Studenyi that is situated in Mizhhirschyna. It is about 18 kilometers long.

Extreme points of Transcarpathian region.

West: 22°9′ east longitude; 48°27′ north latitude. Solomonovo village (1.5 km from Solomonovo village, Uzhhorod district).

East: 24°37′ east longitude; 48°4′ north latitude. Chorna Mountain, Chornohora Mountain range (12 km from Luhy village,Rakhiv district).

North:22°35′ east longitude; 495′ north latitude. Stuzhytsya village, Velykobereznyany district, the Eastern Beskids range (the biosphere reserve).

South:24°18′ east longitude; 47°53′ north latitude. Dovhorunsk marble mine area (6 km from Dilove village, Rakhiv district).

 

Maximum width (straight line) from north to south is 100 kilometers.

Maximum length (straight line) from east to west is about 200 kilometers.

Solomonovo villageis an extreme western point of Ukraine.

The geometrical geographical center of Transcarpathia is located near Kuk Mountain in Svalyava district.

 

Velyka Kopanya villagein Vynohradiv district is the capital of twins. There are more than sixty pairs of twins in the village, although its population is less than 4 000 inhabitants.

More than 150 000 Hungarians live in Transcarpathian Oblast. This makes more than 12% of the population. Hungarians are the largest foreign diaspora of our country.

The highest situatedvillage in Ukraine is Rakhiv. It is located at an altitude of 820 meters above sea level. Rakhivholds another record: the biggest vertical drop between the streets that makes 600 meters –400 meters from the lowest one,1000 meters to the highest one.

The longest railway tunnel in Ukraine was built and set between Skotarske andBeskyd. It is 1747 meters long. The tunnel was built back in 1887 and it had been reconstructed several times since then.

The highest situated railway station in Ukraine is “Beskyd”. It is located nearby Verkhniy Studennyi village, Mizhhirya district. The station was built 790 meters above sea level.

The most snow-clad village is Ruska Mokra in Transcarpathia. A long-lasting snow cover lies here 110 days a year, averagely. It is caused by specifics of a village location between mountain ranges that significantly hide its territory from direct sunlight.

The largest mountain lake in Ukraine is Synevyr. It is located 989 meters above sea level in Mizhhirya area. The territory of Synevyr covers 7 hectares; it is 24 meters deep. People and legends also call it “the blue eye”.

The Narcissus Valley nearby Kireshi village, Khust district, is the only place in Ukraine with the wild growing narrow-leaves white narcissi. They resemble garden narcissi, but the flowers are larger sometimes reaching 10 cm in diameter. The picturesque valley of 80 hectares, covered with a carpet of flowers and surrounded with mountain slopes, is a natural landmark. Narcissi bloom once a year, usually in May, within 2-3 weeks.

The Linden Alley in Uzhhorod is 2200 meters long and is the longest, not only in Ukraine but also in Europe.

“Pearl Cave” 2.5 km from Mala Uholka at the watershed of Malaand Velyka Uholka, there is a karst cave laid in Jurassic marble limestones.It is live example ofthe influence of interstitial water on slightly soluble carbonate rocks. Apart from stalactites, numerous calcite balls, resembling pearlsbecause of their shine and beauty, formed on the walls,hence the name.

The Enchanted Valley. In Irshava region of Transcarpathia, in the upper course of Smerekiv stream, there is a surprisingly picturesque place–the Enchanted Valley or Smerekiv Stone. The weathering has given a wonderful look to its numerous 20 meters high cliffs, composed of light-gray calcites lying among hydrothermally altered volcanic tuff. This state reserve of 150 hectares attracts many tourists annually.

The Lover’s Rocks. On the outskirts of Kostylivka village, Rakhiv region, two steep cliffs up to 20 meters high rise above the opposite banks of the Tysa River. There are two crosses on the tops which, according to the legend,were put in memory of the tragic death of two lovers,Ivan and Marichka, whose parents were against their marriage. Desperate Marichka threw herself down from the cliff and died. Overwhelmed with grief, Ivanalso threw himself from the top of the cliff on the opposite bank of the Tysa.

The biggest variety of holubtsi (cabbage rolls) that made 25 kinds, was recorded on the culinary festival in Velykyi Bychkiv.

The smallest holubets made at the festival of this delicious dishin Chetovo village, Berehove district, was cooked by Eva Nod. It was only 2 centimeters long.

The Irshavka River initially flows to the west, then gradually turns to the south and southeast, and then slowly flows back to the west, forming a giant letter “S”.

1770 is the year of official potato appearance in Transcarpathia. Big areas were allocated for potato and mulberry plantations.

The highest person of Transcarpathia lives in Velykyi Bychkivvillage, Rakhiv district. His name is Vasyl Kravchuk, and he is 2 meters and 13 centimeters tall.
