Interesting Facts about Ukraine

  • Ukraine is the biggest country the full territory of which is situated in Europe. Only Russia, Turkey, and Denmark are larger than Ukraine. However, the bigger part of Russia and Turkey is situated in Asia, and the Danish island, Greenland, is a part of the North American continent.

 

  • Geographical center of Europe is situated in Rakhiv, the Ukrainian town, which is surrounded by the picturesque Carpathian Mountains.

 

  • The population of Ukraine is considered to be the most educated. The quantity of people with the higher education degree per person exceeds the average European level. Ukraine ranks 4th in the world for the number of citizens with higher education.

 

  • At a contest of languages beauty in Paris in 1934, the Ukrainian language took the third place after French and Persian on such criteria as phonetics, vocabulary, phraseology, and sentence structure. According to melodiousness, the Ukrainian language took the second place after the Italian.

 

  • The author of the world’s first Constitution is PylypOrlyk. On April 5, 1710 he was elected as a hetman of Zaporizhian Cossack Army. On the same day, he proclaimed “Pacts and Constitution of Rights and Liberties of Zaporizhzhya Army”. In the USA, the Constitution was adopted in 1787, when in France and Poland it was adopted only in 1791.

 

  • Lavra is the biggest and the most influential friary. The status of lavra is given only to six monasteries in the world. Three of them are in Ukraine.

 

  • The longest musical instrument in the world is Ukrainian trembita. Its length can reach up to four meters and its sound can be heard for more than 10 kilometers.

 

  • About ¼ of all world’s black soil reserve is concentrated in the territory of Ukraine. Black soil, if cultivated in a proper way, gives the mostharvest. During WWII, German soldiers even transported the black soil by trains.

 

  • Ukraine is one of founder countries of the UNO. The representatives of Ukraine (the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic) took active part in formulation of the UNO statute, which was adopted on June 26, 1945.

 

  • Among the most impressive achievements of the Ukrainian aircraft engineering there is the biggest aircraftthe Antonov An-225 Mriya and the most powerful one – the Antonov An-124 Ruslan. In 2001, Mriya, having taken 253 tons of cargo, broke 124 records.

 

  • The length of the world’s longest trolley bus route is 86 kilometers and it goes between Yalta and Simferopolin Crimea.

 

  • In terms of sunny days, Yalta is equal to Nice and other Mediterranean resorts. The most territory of Ukraine is situated within temperate continental climate, however, subtropical climate is characteristic to the Southern coast of the Crimea.
